Lithium batteries are regulated as dangerous goods, so shipping power banks needs the right paperwork. Missing documents are the most common reason for delays at the airport.
Documents you need
- UN38.3 test summary: proves the battery passed altitude, thermal, vibration, shock, short-circuit and overcharge tests
- MSDS / SDS: describes the chemistry and safe handling
- Air transport conditions report: required by many forwarders for air freight
Air, sea or express?
Air freight is fast but has strict limits on watt-hours and state of charge. Sea freight is the most economical for large orders. Express couriers accept power banks only on approved accounts.
Tips for smooth shipping
- Keep the state of charge at or below 30% for air shipments
- Use the correct UN3480 or UN3481 labels
- Book with a forwarder experienced in battery cargo
